5 Reasons To Learn How to Code

In our digital world it’s difficult to find any part of our lives that isn’t connected or influenced by technology. Even industries that have never been big in technology are jumping on board to make sure they don’t miss out.

Learning how to code can be a great way to move into an amazing career that has tremendous opportunity.

Web development is as a career is growing with popularity and for good reason. Salaries are continuously going up due to demand. At the sametime, while salaries are up, developers also have great job security since there is always somebody hiring.

What are some of the other reasons to learn how to code?

1. Mindset Change

Learning how to code is about learning a new technical skill that is all about logic. This will challenge you to use your brain differently, something that many developers love. One of the biggest mindset changes and how you will look at your computer. Right now you see your computer as a great tool for searching the web, making a dinner reservation, and following up with friends on social media. Once you learn how to code you will see it as a tool with endless possibilities. 

2. Control your Schedule

Many people who learn how to code do so for the change in their daily schedule. Since you are working on your own and aren’t forced to deal with clients, having flexibility in your workday becomes a new normal. No more are you forced to be at your desk from 9 to 5 from Monday to Friday.

Being a developer is about getting your work done. So want to head to the gym for a mid day workout? Why not! Feel like grabbing a long lunch with a friend? Go for it! Work flexibility is one of the most rewarding experiences for a new coder.

3. Remote Work

Being able to work remotely from anywhere is one aspect that is very desirable to most. Being able to work from home, a friends house, coffee shop,  or on vacation gives developers to life on their terms. You can travel the world while working remotely if you wanted! As long as you find the right contract and get your work done, people don’t care where it got done!

4. Work with Awesome People

It’s no secret that a lot of smart people are attracted to the tech industry. Learning to code means you’re going to work with these people building and creating software in order to fix the world’s problems.

Being part of a company that has a great atmosphere and that is focused on changing the world can be inspirational and motivating to anyone. At the sametime working with smart people means you will be challenged and constantly growing as a coder.

5. Level Up

Last reason to learn to code is to get into a career that is always challenging you to improve and grow. There is no other profession that has more Courses, Tutorials, forums, etc that are focused on helping coders improve. Once started it won’t take long for you to become obsessed with improving and becoming the best developer you can be.


How to start?

Getting started is much easier than you think. There are tons of resources online that will be a great first step in order to start your journey on learning to code. 

What you have to figure out is what type of resource is best for you to learn. You will be able to find Free or paid courses online. There are also coding bootcamps that can cost a few thousand dollars, but get you a job ready in 2 to 4 months. Everyone is different so you need to choose the best option for you.

Below are some resources for you to get started that are great for beginners:

  • Code Academy
  • Udemy
  • Free Code Camp
  • Coursera

All these websites have great tutorials, but Free Code Camp stands out as the best to help you get job ready.

If while doing these online courses you realize that you love to code but would like to be taught and have more support, look into your local or online coding bootcamp. These intensive programs are typically full time and last around 2 to 3 months. Here you will have an instructor and code everyday with support. 


What did I do?

The path I personally took to learn how to code was started with the basics on CodeAcademy. Then I took a course on Udemy. Finally I joined a 2 month intensive bootcamp that got me job ready.
